Road Closure

The northbound and southbound Dallas North Tollway will be closed Friday and Saturday nights, September 23 and 24.  The northbound Dallas North Tollway and the southwest-bound Sam Rayburn Tollway will be closed Sunday, September 25, all day and night.  The details of each closure are described below.  NTTA has provided a map of these closures and the detour routes at the following link: http://library.constantcontact.com/download/get/file/1103529694561-331/SRT_Seg5_DNT_Closure+Map_092311.pdf
 
Road Closures Friday night, September 23
 
These closures will start at 9:00 p.m. on Friday night and will reopen by 7:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, September 24.
 
The northbound Dallas North Tollway main lanes will be closed between Headquarters Drive in Plano and Gaylord Parkway in Frisco.  Northbound traffic on the Dallas North Tollway will be diverted onto the northbound Dallas Parkway frontage road at Headquarters Drive and will be able to re-enter the Tollway at Gaylord Parkway.
 
The southbound Dallas North Tollway main lanes will be closed between Gaylord Parkway in Frisco and Headquarters Drive in Plano.  Southbound traffic will be diverted onto the southbound Dallas Parkway frontage road at Gaylord Parkway and will be able to re-enter the DNT at Headquarters Drive.
 
Road Closures Saturday night, September 24
 
These closures will start at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday night.  The southbound DNT will reopen by 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, September 25, but the northbound DNT will remain closed on Sunday.

These closures will start at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning and will reopen by 5:00 a.m. Monday morning, September 26.
 
The northbound Dallas North Tollway main lanes will be closed between Headquarters Drive in Plano and Gaylord Parkway in Frisco.  Northbound traffic on the Dallas North Tollway will be diverted onto the northbound Dallas Parkway frontage road at Headquarters Drive and will be able to re-enter the Tollway at Gaylord Parkway.
 
The southwest-bound Sam Rayburn Tollway main lanes will be closed between Parkwood Boulevard and Legacy Drive.  Southwest-bound traffic on the SRT will be diverted onto the southwest-bound SH 121 frontage road at Parkwood Boulevard and will be able to reenter the SRT at Legacy Drive.
 
 
These road closures are part of NTTA's interchange construction project.  Motorists are urged to use caution in the construction zone and to choose an alternate route in advance.

(August 18, 2011) Whether you have lived in Frisco all your life or recently moved here, you probably have questions about why and how the city does what it does. Get answers and discover things you never knew about the place where you live through City Hall 101. The free program is a great way for residents to boost their knowledge about what happens behind the scenes at City Hall and other municipal facilities. The next City Hall 101 class runs from September 12 through December 5, 2011.

During the 13-week program, which runs on Monday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., meet Mayor Maher Maso, city managers, directors and staff. Find out what it takes to build roads and parks and to plan for Frisco’s future growth. See the equipment first responders from the Frisco Fire Department and Frisco Police Department use to protect and save lives and what it takes to keep it operating smoothly.  Frisco ISD leaders will host one of the classes and show you the latest technology used by the school district and how they manage meeting the needs of a growing student population.

The initial session on September 12 will be held at the George A. Purefoy Municipal Center, 6101 Frisco Square Blvd.; however, the locations of Monday night sessions will change to different city facilities to correspond with the department being discussed.

City Hall 101 is open to residents 18 and older. Class size is limited.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee
has announced that the 2012 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game
will be played at noon on Saturday Jan. 7 at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco,
Texas.

The game will be played at the 23,500-seat venue in the suburan North
Dallas community, which hosted the championship game for the first time
last season after being awarded a three-year contract to host the title
game in 2010. The game will be televised by ESPN2.

The championship game, hosted by the locally based Southland Conference,
the City of Frisco and the Hunt Sports Group, is the culmination of a
20-team championship bracket.

The Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) is comprised of the
conferences and institutions that compete in the NCAA Division I Football
Championship – Big Sky, Big South, Colonial Athletic Association,
Mid-Eastern Athletic, Missouri Valley Football, Northeast, Ohio Valley,
Patriot League, Southern and the Southland. The Ivy League and
Southwestern Athletic Conference are in the FCS as well, but neither
chooses to participate in the football championship.

The FCS embodies a tradition of excellence through high level competition,
student-athlete character and sportsmanship throughout the regular season
and the championship experience.

In 2011, the first at Pizza Hut Park, Eastern Washington rallied from a
19-0 third quarter deficit to beat Delaware 20-19 to win the national
championship

Gary Burns Drive Now Open

GARY BURNS DRIVE REOPEN

(July 20, 2011) Gary Burns Drive, which had been closed for reconstruction, was opened to traffic today, July 20. Traffic can again travel on Gary Burns Drive between Main Street and Preston Road, and the improved road provides another access point to the new Walmart.

Gary Burns Drive has been widened and now has additional turn lanes at its intersection with Preston Road.

Motorists are urged to use caution in this area as people become accustomed to the new traffic patterns at the intersection of Preston Road and Gary Burns Drive.

DNT Closures

We had previously announced that the NTTA had planned to close the Dallas North Tollway each weekend in June, but now they have changed that plan.  This weekend the frontage roads will be closed and the main lanes will remain open.  The DNT main lanes will need to be closed again on several future weekends and we will announce each closure when NTTA finalizes those dates.  The closure announcement for this weekend is as follows:
 
The northbound and southbound Dallas Parkway frontage roads will be closed between Gaylord Parkway and SH 121 this weekend.  The frontage roads will close at 10:00 p.m. Friday night, June 17, and remain closed throughout the weekend, June 18-19.  They will reopen at 5:00 a.m. Monday morning, June 20.  NTTA has provided the attached map of this closure and the detour routes.
 
Northbound Dallas Parkway will be closed between the southwest-bound SH 121 frontage road and the northbound DNT exit ramp to Gaylord Parkway.  (The exit ramp to Gaylord Parkway will not be closed.)  During this closure, northbound traffic on Dallas Parkway will be diverted onto the northeast-bound SH 121 frontage road to Parkwood Boulevard to continue their journey north.  Detour signs will be posted.
 
Southbound Dallas Parkway will be closed between Gaylord Parkway and the northeast-bound SH 121 frontage road.  During this closure, all southbound traffic will be directed to turn left onto Gaylord Parkway and use Parkwood Boulevard as a detour.  Southbound traffic on the Dallas North Tollway will not be able to exit to SH 121 and should plan to use Legacy Drive or Parkwood Boulevard as an alternative route.  Residents of Stonebriar Creek Estates will need to use their entrance on Legacy Drive.  Customers of David McDavid Honda should approach the dealership using the southwest-bound SH 121 frontage road.

Traffic Switch on Lebanon Rd. Starting June 7

(June 6, 2011) Traffic on Lebanon Road will be switched to the other side of the road at Legacy Drive starting at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 7.  Traffic on east and westbound Lebanon Road will continue to be limited to one through lane in each direction, but all traffic will be shifted to the north side of the road.  Traffic on Legacy Drive will continue to be limited to one through lane in each direction.   This will allow the southwest quadrant of the intersection to be reconstructed.

Motorists are urged to use caution approaching the intersection of Legacy Drive and Lebanon Road as people become accustomed to the new traffic patterns within the shifted lanes.

This traffic switch is necessary to the intersection reconstruction project at Legacy Drive and Lebanon Road.  As a result, the bump in the intersection will be corrected and additional through lanes and turn lanes will be built.  Once the project is complete, all four directions of the intersection will have two left-turn lanes, three through lanes, and most will have a right-turn lane. Frisco Memorial Day Event

MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY TO BE HELD AT FRISCO COMMONS PARK, MAY 30

(May 26, 2011)  A vintage, military helicopter display and presentation of a memorial wreath are among the highlights of a Memorial Day Ceremony to be held on Monday, May 30 at 9 a.m. at the city’s war memorial at Frisco Commons Park, 8000 McKinney Road. 

The keynote speaker will be Frisco resident Col. Grady Venable, USAF Retired.  Boy Scout Troop 298 will present the colors.  Residents will also enjoy patriotic performances by the Frisco Chorale and the Frisco Community Band.  Military vehicles will also be on display, as well.
Organizers are encouraging observers to bring their lawn chairs or blankets for seating. The event is free and open to the public.

The event is sponsored by the City of Frisco, the Frisco VFW Post 2848 and the Frisco Garden Club. Other participants are the Frisco Rotary Club and Civil Air Patrol Cadets.   

Proclamation: Pippa Couvillion Retirement

WHEREAS,   Philippa Couvillion, known to one and all as “Pippa”- wife to Kenneth, mother to Jason and Justin, and a resident of the City of Frisco since 1987; and

WHEREAS,   Pippa Couvillion’s career with the City began first as a volunteer in 1987, then as a part-time employee in 1994, and finally as a full-time employee in 1999; and

WHEREAS,   Pippa Couvillion’s efforts saw the start of curbside recycling with 18 gallon bins, implementation of fully automated cart service for household trash collection, the transition to 95 gallon carts for recyclables collection, and the recycling milestone of over 1,500 tons collected per month –resulting in savings to Frisco’s citizens of millions of dollars in avoided landfill disposal costs; and

WHEREAS,   Pippa Couvillion has been “spot on” with recommendations for improving recycling in Frisco, implementing programs ensuring the city’s future continues to be green including “Chunk your Junk”, household hazardous waste program, the environmental collection center, the city’s largest volunteer event  “Clean It and Green It”, Heard from the Curb, as well as obtaining over $600,000 in grant funding; and

WHEREAS, Pippa Couvillion has been “brilliant” in the creation of Rufus Recycles, Cari the Cart, Benny the Rent-a-Bin, Buzz the Bee, and all the other communication and teaching tools.  Moreover, she has been recognized by receiving the 1994 Citizen of the Year Award, 2004 North Texas Corporate Recycling Association – Environmentalist of the Year, 2005 National Recycling Coalition – Outstanding Educational Program, 2006 Solid Waste Association of North America’s  Public Education Excellence Award, and the 2009 Leadership Award from the State of Texas Alliance for Recycling; and

WHEREAS, Pippa Couvillion has tirelessly and loyally served Frisco’s residents with her trademark generosity, courtesy, “jolly good” humor, and affability - winning friends and supporters for Frisco’s Environmental Programs; and

WHEREAS,   Pippa Couvillion has been extremely knowledgeable about effective recycling/solid waste management techniques, helpful, dutiful, unselfish, and has provided exemplary service and abiding commitment to the City of Frisco and its citizens; and

WHEREAS,   Pippa Couvillion upon retiring from public service after 17 years employment and almost 25 years total effort in the cause of bettering the City of Frisco - the Frisco City Council, staff, and citizens want to express our appreciation to Pippa Couvillion for serving the City of Frisco and wish her a fond “Cheerio!”

WHEREAS,   today’s society is finding more citizens involved in motorcycling on the roads of our country; and

WHEREAS,   motorcyclists are roughly unprotected and therefore more prone to injury or death in a crash than other vehicle drivers; and

WHEREAS,   campaigns have helped inform riders and motorists alike on motorcycle safety issues to reduce motorcycle related risks, injuries, and, most of all, fatalities, though a comprehensive approach to motorcycle safety; and

WHEREAS,   it is the responsibility of all who put themselves behind the wheel, to become aware of motorcyclists, regarding them with the same respect as any other vehicle traveling the highways of this country; and it is the responsibility of riders and motorists alike to obey all traffic laws and safety rules; and

WHEREAS,   urging all citizens of our community to become aware of the inherent danger involved in operating a motorcycle, and for riders and motorists alike to give each other the mutual respect they deserve.

WHEREAS,  The Wakeland High School Varsity Girls Soccer team on their road to the 4A State Championship game in the playoffs defeated 7 other teams to compete in the 4A State Championship game where they won ending their outstanding season with an overall record of 25 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie.

Older Americans Month Proclamation

WHEREAS,               Older Americans teach us the timeless lessons of courage, sacrifice, and love. By sharing their wisdom and experience, they serve as role models for future generations. During Older Americans Month, we pay tribute to our Senior Citizens and their contributions to our Nation; and

            WHEREAS,               Our Seniors deserve our greatest respect. Their example shows us how to persevere in the face of hardship, care for others in need, and take pride in our communities. Their patriotism, service, and leadership inspire Americans and shape the character and future of our country; and

            WHEREAS,               Millions of Americans are now living longer, more productive lives, and many are choosing to stay active in the workforce. Senior Citizens are also giving their time and talents by volunteering in many ways -- from mentoring youth and participating in environmental stewardship projects to serving the homeless and assisting in emergency preparedness. More than 500,000 Senior Citizens volunteer through Senior Corps, a network of programs that enables older Americans to meet the needs and challenges of their communities. Through the USA Freedom Corps and Senior Corps, older Americans are dedicating their time and energy to strengthening our Nation and serving a cause greater than themselves; and

            WHEREAS,               This year marks the 46^th anniversary of the Older Americans Act of 1965, which was created to improve the welfare of our Seniors. By treating older Americans with the dignity and respect they deserve, we honor their legacy and contributions to our Nation. Their guidance and love enrich our country and make America a better place for all.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Maher Maso, Mayor of the City of Frisco, Texas, do hereby proclaim May 2011 as:

“OLDER AMERICANS MONTH”

And I commend our Senior Citizens for their many contributions to our society.
