The 2011 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game will be played Friday, January, 7, 2011, at 6 p.m. (CST) at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas. The game, which concludes a 20-team national playoff, will be hosted by the Southland Conference, the City of Frisco and Hunt Sports Group. Pizza Hut Park will also host the 2012 and 2013 national championship games. The national title games were awarded to Frisco in February after a 13-year run in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Trick-Or-Treat - Not to be missed!

‘TRICK-OR-TREAT’ AT FRISCO FIRE SAFETY TOWN HAPPENS FRIDAY NIGHT, OCTOBER 22; RESIDENTS ASKED TO USE FREE SHUTTLE SERVICE – PARKING LIMITED AT EVENT

(October 20, 2010) Grab your goody bag and come in costume for lots of treats and no tricks this Friday night, October 22 at the fourth annual Trick-or-Treat at Frisco Fire Safety Town. The event is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Children, tots through fifth graders, are invited to trick or treat through the miniature town, located next door to Frisco Central Fire Station, 8601 Gary Burns Dr. Admission is free.

Parking at the event site is limited. Residents are encouraged to use the free shuttle service available at the Frisco Athletic Center parking lot, located at 5828 Nancy Jane Ln., east of the Preston Road – Wade Boulevard intersection. Frisco ISD school buses will be shuttling visitors back and forth from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

This is a safe, fun way to trick-or-treat, but Frisco Fire Safety Town does require a parent or guardian to accompany children to the event and to provide supervision at all times. For more information, please visit FriscoTexas.gov/SafetyTown.

The City of Frisco observes Halloween on October 31.  Since Halloween falls on a Sunday, we encourage residents to use their discretion on the times they choose to pass out candy and/or allow their children to ‘trick or treat’.  Most children begin trick or treating at dusk and are finished between 8:30 – 9 p.m.

Residents who have conflicting commitments should communicate with your Home Owners Association to see if your neighborhood has organized an alternative event for residents.

Ikea Frisco Tree Hugger Day Proclamation

WHEREAS:               The purpose of the IKEA Tree Hugger Day is to celebrate the planting of more than 1.5 million trees funded by donations from IKEA customers and by IKEA US.  The trees are being planted via their partner, American Forests; and

WHEREAS:               IKEA wants to encourage the planting of trees as a way that we can all make a positive impact on the environment as trees help to sequester CO2 created by transportation and have many other benefits for the environment and wildlife; and

WHEREAS:               In the last 3 years 128,411 trees have been planted in Texas in the Lower Rio Grande and Longleaf Pine Ecosystem Restoration project as a result of the funds collected; and

WHEREAS:               From tiny acorns – great trees grow and IKEA Frisco will make sure that one historical tree takes root at the Frisco Heritage Center, as it donates three oak trees to the Heritage Association of Frisco; and

WHEREAS:               IKEA Frisco presents the small oak trees grown from an acorn of the famous Texas Treaty Oak – the last living council oak in Austin to the Heritage Association of Frisco to be planted at the Heritage Center; and

WHEREAS:               The donation is just a small part of IKEA Frisco’s celebration of Tree Hugger Day.  The company has been participating in this promotion to plant trees to help the environment for many years.

Red Ribbon Week Proclamation

            WHEREAS,               Alcohol and Drug Abuse is one of the greatest threats to the health of our State’s young people; and

            WHEREAS,               Students, Parents, Teachers, Law Enforcement Officials, Business Leaders, Elected Officials, and Citizens each have a part to play in the war against drugs; and

WHEREAS,               Education is our most important weapon in fighting drug abuse and we must remind our young people that turning to alcohol or illegal drugs is never the right decision; and

WHEREAS,               Progressive steps have been made to combat substance abuse, but we continue to recognize that total awareness and cooperative efforts are crucial to continue positive growth in prevention, intervention, and treatment services.  Some of the programs that Frisco Independent School District, in conjunction with the City of Frisco, has effectively implemented are:

Bob Shaver Day Proclamation

WHEREAS,               Bob Shaver began his work in Frisco, Texas in January 2006; and

WHEREAS,               Bob Shaver is the Senior Vice-President, Marketing & Community Relations for Frisco Square; and

WHEREAS,               Bob Shaver recruited Jeff Trykoski in the fall of 2006 to light up Frisco Square.  By reaching out to the City they have made Frisco Square a “holiday lights and music spectacular” with 80,000 visitors the first year and expect 500,000 this year.  It’s the 3^rd largest event in North Texas; and

WHEREAS,               Bob Shaver has also been instrumental in the creation of the Frisco Farmer’s Market which launched in August 2007 with two vendors and is now the largest farmer’s market north of Dallas with 40 regular vendors and a waiting list for more; and

WHEREAS,               Bob Shaver is also a member of the Frisco Downtown Merchants where he convinced the group to change their name and charter to include all the businesses along Main Street from the Dallas North Tollway to Preston Road; and           

WHEREAS,               Bob Shaver has supported a variety of community events which include the Great Steak of Texas, Frisco Residents of Color, Dallas Koi Kichi Club, Frisco Miracle League, Visual Arts Guild of Frisco, Frisco ISD, Museum of the American Railroad, Frisco Heritage Association, Frisco Education Foundation, Frisco Family Services, Frisco Sunrise Rotary, Boy Scout Troop 51, Jaguar Owners of the Southwest, the Fusion event, the Columbian Fest, Morning Maniacs Car Club, the Frisco Community Parade, Taking it to the Streets Ministry, the Frisco Rotary Club and the Frisco Chamber of Commerce; and

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Proclamation

WHEREAS,               In 1995, JoNell Moffett-Prince was diagnosed with breast cancer and after 8 years as a survivor she received the devastating news in 2003 that she had breast cancer again; and

WHEREAS,               During her courageous battles, her co-worker, Gwen Sanders, who she now refers to as her “earth angel” organized a support group to ensure that JoNell would not embark on her journey alone; and

WHEREAS,               Gwen Sanders made sure JoNell received cards, calls and emails and she sent out a weekly status report to her family and friends; and

WHEREAS,               Today, JoNell is a 15-year and 8-year breast cancer survivor; and

WHEREAS,               Both Gwen and JoNell are featured on Gatorade bottles sold nationwide at Kroger and Kroger Affiliated stores in support of October Breast Cancer Awareness month; and

WHEREAS,               National Breast Cancer Awareness Month educates women about the importance of early detection for breast cancer; and

WHEREAS,               Death rates from breast cancer have been declining, and this change is believed to be the result of earlier detection and improved treatment; and

WHEREAS,               Mammography—an  “x-ray” of the breast—is recognized as the single most effective method of detecting breast changes that may be cancer long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt.

Parents, take advantage a free swim assessment and 35-minute swim lesson for your child from certified learn-to-swim instructors. Swim assessments will begin at 8 a.m. in the Indoor Aquatic Center and will take approximately 20 minutes. All participants should arrive wearing their swimsuit 5 to 10 minutes prior to the assessment beginning. The swim lesson will take place from 8:25 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Children must participate in the assessment in order to receive the lesson. Swim goggles are encouraged for children of all levels.

The Indoor Aquatic Center will also host the Pumpkin Splash Patch from 10

a.m. to noon.   This fun fall event is open to children 2 ½  to 10 years

Traffic Switch on Eldorado Parkway @ Preston Rd. Oct. 15

As part of TxDOT’s Preston Road widening project, all traffic on Eldorado Parkway will be switched to the north side of Eldorado Parkway starting this Friday, October 15 (weather permitting).  East and westbound traffic will now share the northern half of the road while the southern half is reconstructed.  This will change the alignment of the through lanes of Eldorado Parkway as it crosses Preston Road so motorists in all directions at that intersection should pay attention to the new location of stop lines.  In addition, motorists on Eldorado Parkway who are approaching Preston Road should pay attention to the new configuration of traffic control devices that will shift traffic to and from the northern half of the roadway.

Motorists are urged to use caution in this area as people become accustomed to the new traffic patterns at the intersection.

Frisco Griffins Season Opener

This Saturday, October 16th, is the first cup game of the 2010/11 season for the Frisco Griffins. The game also marks the club's move to Dr. Pink Field at Pizza Hut Park, a great facility with seating for several hundred fans.

The Griffins are an exciting club to be a part of and we aim to be a regular fixture in Frisco's excellent sporting scene, as well as play a positive role in our community by giving back to our chosen charity, Frisco Family Services. If you haven't been to a rugby game before, now's the time to try something different. The sport is fast paced, physical and very addictive and makes for a great night out with friends, family or colleagues.

Tickets are just $4 and cover both the men's cup game (7pm) and the curtain raiser, the first ever game for the Frisco Griffins Women's Rugby team (6pm). Possible Mountain Lion Sighting

POSSIBLE MOUNTAIN LION SIGHTING ALONG TRAIL AT FRISCO COMMONS PARK; PARK GOERS ADVISED TO USE CAUTION WALKING THE TRAIL

(October 8, 2010) There have been three separate sightings this week of what appears to be a mountain lion along the hiking trail area on the north side of Frisco Commons Park, located at 8000 McKinney Rd. The latest sighting was late this morning by a City of Frisco parks employee. The city employee says the animal was not aggressive and ran away.

Frisco Commons Park remains open, and parks management reminds residents and visitors that operating hours for all city parks are from dawn until dusk. Signs will be posted around the park alerting park goers of the recent sightings and you are urged to use caution in the area.

While there have been reports of bobcat sightings in Frisco in recent years, all three people who saw the animal along the Frisco Commons Park trail say it was not a bobcat, but a mountain lion. Texas Parks and Wildlife officials have been notified and will come out to look for physical evidence to determine what type of animal is in the area. Frisco Animal Control officers are also investigating.

“Animal control staff has walked the area, and could not find evidence that a wild animal is living in the hiking trail area of Frisco Commons Park,” said Greg Carr, Animal Control Administrator. “More likely the animal is passing through. Staff will continue to monitor the area to make sure a wild animal is not sticking around.”

The city will not be setting traps because most wildlife experts agree mountain lions are difficult to trap.

According to state wildlife officials, mountain lions are solitary animals, and attacks on humans are rare. Only four reports of mountain lion attacks on humans have been reported in Texas since 1980. Wild animals often use creeks to travel through cities. A female mountain lion has a range of up to 80 to 100 square miles and a male has a range up to 200 square miles.

Here are some things Texas Parks and Wildlife suggests you can do should you encounter a mountain lion:
• Pick up small children to prevent them from running and triggering a
rush or attack.
• Stay calm, talk calmly, and slowly back away, keeping eye contact with
the mountain lion. Do not run or turn your back.
• Carry a sturdy walking stick with you. Do what you can to appear larger
by raising your arms or waving the stick.
• If the lion is aggressive, throw rocks or sticks, and speak firmly and
loudly.
• Fight back if a lion attacks you. Lions can be driven off by fighting
back.

City Manager's Letter regarding Exide

October 7, 2010
To The Citizens of Frisco:

There have been many stories written and broadcast recently about Exide Technologies and the non attainment zone related to lead emissions from Exide’s Frisco plant. For those of you who aren’t familiar, the non attainment zone, which is due to a new lower standard for lead, is designated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) after review of the recommendation made by Governor Rick Perry.

Currently, it is estimated to cover two square miles around the Exide plant, which is located south of downtown. This letter is to inform you about what the city has been doing to address the issue and what the city intends to do going forward.

The city recently became aware of a battery recycling plant in California which has installed enhanced pollution control mechanisms that produce some amazing reductions in pollutants going into the air. The results show lead emissions were reduced in excess of 99 percent and other pollutants were reduced by more than 90 percent*. We have asked our consultants to look into the process to see if similar results could be expected in Frisco.

Three weeks ago, I went to Atlanta to meet with the new CEO and President of Exide Technologies, Jim Bolch. At the meeting, I expressed our citizens’ concerns about the non attainment zone and lack of public response or action by Exide on the issue. I also gave him the information I had about the California plant utilizing the new pollution control technologies that have reported reductions in lead emissions far below the new EPA standards.

The city also has provided similar information to both the EPA and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
Mr. Bolch was very receptive and indicated he wanted to change the perception of Exide by making it a more responsive company to public concerns. It is my understanding that Exide continues to investigate the California plant to see if the pollution controls are adaptable to Exide’s Frisco plant.

After the meeting, Exide submitted an application to TCEQ to reduce its current permit limits. It is my understanding TCEQ is working to see what effects the reduced limits will have on the proposed non attainment zone.
Concerning the new non attainment area and lead emissions, the city has worked with the TCEQ to place air monitors at key locations around the Exide plant. In two instances, the city has made available city right of way and city owned property for the monitors. In another instance the city worked with a private property owner to obtain an easement for TCEQ. In regards to the EPA, the city provided access to city owned property and gained permission from the Frisco Independent School District for soil tests around the perimeter of the Exide plant.

Concerning immediate health concerns, the city has requested that Exide put a program in place so anyone living in the area of the plant may have their blood lead level checked. It is my understanding that Exide will be putting the program in place in the next few weeks.

In addition, the TCEQ and the Texas Department of Health were requested by the city to update the health risk study originally completed in 1995. Dr. Laura M. Plunkett worked on the original study and has been contacted to do the follow up study. Currently, the TCEQ is waiting for the results from EPA for the above mentioned soil tests before proceeding with the study.

But our efforts to make Frisco a safe place to be did not begin in the last few months. When the city learned in 2008 that Exide had submitted an application for increased production, the city immediately made contact with TCEQ to protest the application. Exide withdrew the application after becoming aware of the city's protest.

I have worked with the plant and its managers for the past 23 years. During that time, the plant has made several pollution control improvements, such as putting in stack scrubbers in the late 1980s and a crystallizer in the 1990s to take its process water out of the city wastewater stream. Approximately four years ago I met with the then manager of the plant, and I suggested that we should make a push to get the latest and best pollution controls installed at the plant. He agreed to work with me towards that goal. Unfortunately, he left the plant a few months after that meeting.

The city kept its commitment by working on the battery recycling fee issue. As background, beginning in the 1990s, Frisco led the effort to have a portion of the battery recycling fee collected on the sale of every lead-acid battery in the state actually go towards the problems/costs associated with recycling lead-acid batteries. While unsuccessful then, in the 2009 legislative session, with great assistance from State Senator Florence Shapiro and State Representative Ken Paxton, we were able to get a bill passed and signed by Governor Rick Perry, which allows up to 10 percent of the fees collected to go towards issues associated with battery recycling. We continue to work with TCEQ to have rules put in place establishing how these funds may be accessed and used.

Mayor Maher Maso and the Frisco City Council want you to know the city’s intent is to bring to bear all its efforts and resources to assure that the Exide plant is the most environmentally advanced plant in the country or lead the efforts to stop its operation. We will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to influence Exide, TCEQ and the EPA to do what is in your best interests.

Eastbound Main Street lane temp. Closure

One lane of eastbound Main Street will be closed between Teel Parkway and Legacy Drive for about a week starting Monday, October 11. The closure will start near Majestic Gardens Drive and extend for about 100 feet. The lane will be closed at 9 AM on Monday and will remain continuously closed for up to a week, depending on the weather, while repairs are made to the pavement. During this closure, motorists on eastbound Main Street should expect some brief delay when traveling between Teel Parkway and Legacy Drive.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution in the construction zone.

Senior Citizen Masquerade Ball

We cordially invite you to join us at the Frisco Senior Center for a Masquerade Ball, Saturday, October 9 from 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. Dance the night away to the wonderful music of the Frisco Jazz Band as they play a variety of big band selections. Tickets are $5 per person and may be purchased at the Senior Center.

Frisco Merry Main Street

Join us as we celebrate 20 years of holiday traditions at Frisco’s Merry Main Street Saturday, December 4 from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Simpson Plaza at City Hall. The City of Frisco, local businesses and non-profit organizations combine their efforts each year to host this free holiday celebration. More than 12,000 people attended Merry Main Street last year, and we are looking forward to an even larger crowd this year.

The Parks & Recreation Department is currently accepting applications for non-profit, for-profit and crafters to participate as vendors at this event. In keeping with the spirit of the event, all vendor offerings must be holiday themed. Many organizations look forward to Merry Main Street as one of their largest fundraising opportunities each year as it is a great way to reach out to the community.

Craft vendors are now only $125! Food and for-profit booth space (10’x10’) is $275 and non-profit booth space is $75. A temporary Health Permit (required for booths serving food and/or drinks) and electricity are an additional cost. Types of products that may be offered include: hot and cold drinks, hot food, and sweets, along with holiday themed items such as, holiday gifts, arts and crafts and angel trees.

2010 Champion Tree Competition

The 2010 Champion Tree Competition is underway. Winners will be announced during this year’s annual Arborfest Celebration on Saturday, October 23.
The event will be held at Frisco Commons Park, 8000 McKinney Road, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Winners of the 2010 tree competition will receive plaques to display in front of their champion trees. The celebration will conclude within the hour and end with the ceremonial tree planting.

Categories for this year’s tree competition are hackberry and cedar elm.
All entries must be on private property and located within the Frisco city limits. Entry forms are available at the Frisco Parks & Recreation administrative offices located at 6726 Walnut Street. Office hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday (closed from Noon – 1 p.m.). The deadline for contest entries is Wednesday, October 20 at 5:00 p.m.

Southbound Dallas Parkway closed

SOUTHBOUND DALLAS PARKWAY CLOSED BETWEEN GAYLORD AND SH 121 MONDAY NIGHT, OCTOBER 4

(September 30, 2010) Southbound Dallas Parkway will be closed between Gaylord Parkway and SH 121 Monday night, October 4. The frontage road will close at 9 p.m. Monday night and is expected to reopen by 3 a.m.
early Tuesday morning. The frontage road will be closed to through traffic, but traffic will still be able to the use the ramps to and from the Dallas North Tollway (DNT).

Specifically, during this closure, all southbound traffic that travels south of Gaylord Parkway must enter the southbound DNT. All other southbound traffic will be directed to turn left onto Gaylord Parkway and use Parkwood Boulevard as a detour. In addition, southbound traffic on the DNT will still be able to use the exit to SH 121.

During this overnight closure, residents of Stonebriar Creek Estates will still be able to exit their neighborhood and turn right onto Dallas Parkway, but they will not be able to enter their neighborhood using the Dallas Parkway entrance. Stonebriar Creek residents who are entering the neighborhood after 9 p.m. Monday night will need to use the entrance on Legacy Drive.

This road closure is part of NTTA’s interchange construction project.
Motorists are urged to use caution in the construction zone.

Pizza Hut Park traffic

Eastbound Main Street and eastbound Cotton Gin Road -- between Legacy Drive and Dallas Parkway -- will be closed to traffic at 10 p.m. on Saturday, September 18, in order to move traffic out of Pizza Hut Park and Frisco Square following the KISS/Rockin' the Park Concert.  Both roads should be open again by around 12:30 a.m.  During this closure, traffic heading east on Main Street should use Legacy Drive to reach either Eldorado Parkway or Lebanon Road to continue eastward.  During this time, Frisco Square can be reached by using northbound Dallas Parkway or by turning left from southbound Dallas Parkway at Main Street. 
 
To minimize congestion after the concert, exit routes from Pizza Hut Park and Frisco Square will be limited in order to reduce the points where traffic flows try to cross each other.  A map has been posted on the City's website that shows these exit routes (go to

www.friscotexas.gov and click MOVE ALONG on the right side).  Depending on where they park, concert goers will be directed onto eastbound or westbound Main Street or north to Eldorado Parkway when they leave Pizza Hut Park and then should follow the signs to reach the Dallas North Tollway, Preston Road, SH 121 or US 380.  In addition, to ease congestion after the concert on the southbound Dallas Parkway for those entering the Tollway south of Main Street, a sign has been installed to remind motorists that they can use the right lane to continue to the next Tollway entrance ramp at Stonebrook Parkway.

Motorists are urged to use caution in the area.

FRISCO, Texas – Tickets go on sale Monday, September 13 at 10 a.m., Central, for the 2010 NCAA Division I Football Championship game, which will be played January 7, 2011 at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas.

Tickets will be available online at ncaa.com/football beginning Monday.
Fans may purchase tickets for any of the three seating locations within the stadium, including midfield ($40), sideline ($35) or end zone ($30).
Additionally, fans or organizations interested in purchasing a suite should call 469-365-0000 for pricing.

The championship game, which will be hosted by the Southland Conference, the City of Frisco and the Hunt Sports Group, will be played at 23,500-seat, multi-purpose Pizza Hut Park each of the next three years.
The championship game will be the culmination of a newly expanded 20-team championship bracket, with the field being announced Sunday, November 21.

The Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) includes the conferences and institutions that compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship, in addition to two conferences who choose not to participate in the football championship, the Ivy League and the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The FCS embodies a tradition of excellence through high level competition, student-athlete character and sportsmanship throughout the regular season and the championship experience.

Speaking of ‘green living’, learn more about the services offered at the city’s Environmental Collection Center and what’s in the works for the city’s developing Stormwater program.

9th Annual Mother Son Dance

Put on your dancing shoes! It's time for the 9th Annual Mother Son Dance which will be held Saturday, October 9 at Wakeland High School. It will be an "All Star Evening" of great music, dancing and light refreshments. Participants are encouraged to come dressed formal or in their favorite sports attire.

Sam Rayburn Tollway and SH 121 Frontage Roads closed Sunday

The Sam Rayburn Tollway and the SH 121 frontage roads will be closed briefly between Legacy Drive and the Dallas North Tollway early Sunday morning, August 29. The mainlanes of the highway and the frontage roads will all be closed at 4:30 AM Sunday morning in order to remove an overhead cable. Pilot cars will be used on the highway to slow traffic and bring it to a stop. The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) estimates that the closure will last about 15 minutes.

Motorists are urged to use caution on the highway and the frontage roads around 4:30 AM Sunday and be prepared to stop.

Dreamcourt Dedication tonight!

Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman & Dallas Maverick Jason Terry Open DreamCourt in Frisco Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at 6:00 p.m

FRISCO, TX August 17, 2010—A special basketball “DreamCourt” for this Dallas suburb will be dedicated Wednesday, August 18, the first of a series of courts planned for about 30 U.S. cities as a joint project of the Manifest Foundation, the Nancy Lieberman Foundation, and Sport Court®.

The dedication will be at Bi-Centennial Park in Frisco at 6 p.m. Hall-of-Famer Nancy Lieberman, one of the most respected figures in women’s basketball, will be joined by Jason Terry, the 6’ 2’ guard of the Dallas Mavericks. Both Lieberman and Terry’s signatures will appear on the DreamCourt.

Mayor Maher Maso of Frisco, and other city council members are expected to attend the dedication of the court, which will provide a safe place for local children and members of a nearby Boys and Girls Club to play and learn team sports, enjoy recreational activities, etc.

Lieberman was recently named the first woman coach of an NBA Development League team, the Texas Legends, the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks affiliate. The team is based in Frisco, Texas.

In addition to her coaching, Lieberman is an ESPN commentator, motivational speaker, and runs a series of basketball camps and clinics. The two-time Olympian, a former WNBA coach and player, is also author of her new book "Playbook for Success" which will be released October 18th by Wiley Publishing.

“Our vision for the Lieberman Foundation is to be the catalyst for the development of young girls and boys throughout the country by using basketball as a motivational tool,” Lieberman said.

She said her foundation is dedicated to expanding and ensuring sports opportunities for youth through her basketball camps and clinics and through the establishment of a series of DreamCourts.

“Our mission is to provide a healthy physical, emotional and mental environment for young girls and boys to build their self-esteem and confidence so they will be able to make the right choices in the future,” Lieberman said.

Lieberman has partnered with the Manifest Foundation, a new non-profit organization headquartered in nearby Plano, Texas. Named after the Foundation’s parent organization WorldVentures’ vision of helping others manifest a better life for themselves, the Manifest Foundation is dedicated to creating lasting, positive change in the world by impacting the lives of children.

Scott Caldwell, Product Manager for WorldVentures, said the DreamCourts are planned for every city where there is an NBA Team. “We understand that providing essentials like food, clean water, and shelter, or education and mentorship— creates a ripple effect of positive change that reaches across borders and touches generations,” said Caldwell.

The DreamCourt will be constructed using Connor Sport Court International’s proprietary SportGame™ tile. Connor manufactures Sport Court high performance surfaces and basketball equipment.

Traffic Switch on Eldorado Parkway Between DNT & Preston

TRAFFIC SWITCH ON ELDORADO PARKWAY BETWEEN DALLAS PARKWAY AND PRESTON ROAD EFFECTIVE THURSDAY, AUGUST 19; THREE NEW TRAFFIC SIGNALS BECOME OPERATIONAL

(August 17, 2010) The new eastbound lanes on Eldorado Parkway between Dallas Parkway and Preston Road will be open to traffic on Thursday,
August 19 (weather permitting). Eastbound and westbound traffic will
begin flowing on opposite sides of the median, which will create normal traffic operations on the roadway between Dallas Parkway and Preston Road.
Just west of Preston Road, traffic will transition back to the existing
pavement with two-way traffic. On the same day that traffic is switched,
three new traffic signals will be put into operation on Eldorado Parkway at Frisco Street, North County Road and Rogers Road.

At intersections and driveways, motorists should pay special attention when turning onto eastbound Eldorado Parkway to be sure that they are on the correct side of the median. Motorists approaching Eldorado Parkway from the south should pay special attention to the new locations of stop lines and stop signs on the southern edge of the widened roadway.
Motorists approaching any of the new traffic signals should be prepared to stop at the designated stop line locations.

Motorists are urged to use caution in the area as people become accustomed to the new traffic patterns and traffic signals.

Overnight house fire

 

CAUSE OF OVERNIGHT HOUSE FIRE UNDER INVESTIGATION

(August 13, 2010)  Frisco fire investigators are working to determine the cause of an early morning house fire that resulted in damages estimated at more than $100,000 dollars. 

Dispatchers received a call at 3:48 a.m. this morning from a resident who alerted them about a house fire in the 15000 block of Forest Haven Lane.  When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire at the back of the two-story home.  

Ten units, including an extra engine and the department's Light Air and Rehab vehicle, responded.  Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the garage and the upstairs media room, located above the garage. 

"We called for additional units due to the high temperatures, even during early morning hours," said Assistant Chief Paul Siebert.  "The additional units allow us to rotate crews more often, particularly during summer heat. Our 'rehab' unit is used to do just that.  It gives firefighters a place to rest and get recharged given the high temperatures."

Firefighters say the homeowners were vacationing when fire broke out. A Frisco firefighter was transported to Centennial Medical Center where he was treated and released for heat exhaustion.  No one else was hurt.

Come Join Us for Safety Palooza on July 31

FRISCO, TX – We’re inviting everyone to join us for the City of Frisco’s
first-ever Safety Palooza to be held on Saturday, July 31, from 6 p.m. to
9 p.m. here at the Frisco Police Department. The party is a kickoff for
one of the biggest community celebrations of the year: National Night Out.
This year’s National Night Out happens the following Tuesday evening,
August 3.

Safety Palooza is a great opportunity to get to know the men and women of
Frisco’s police and fire departments. First responders will be on-hand
all evening to answer questions and show off many of their “tools of the
trade” used when emergencies happen. See the police department’s Motors
Unit demonstrate their competitive motorcycle skills, and peek inside a
CareFlite helicopter.

Frisco Aquatic Center pool temporary closed

Due to unexpected repairs to the Outdoor Aquatic Center's filtration system, the outdoor pools will be closed Wednesday, June 30 and Thursday, July 1. If all repairs go as planned, the pools are scheduled to reopen Friday, July 2. The Indoor Aquatic Center will have modified hours to accommodate open swim and other activities that would normally take place in the Outdoor Aquatic Center. Please see the schedule listed below.

Cool off at tomorrow's 'Dive in Movie' at the Frisco Athletic Center Outdoor Aquatic Center

(June 24, 2010) There's no better place to cool off from the Texas heat than at the Outdoor Aquatic Center at the Frisco Athletic Center! Join us tomorrow night (Friday, June 25) for a family movie night featuring the hilariously cool movie 'Surf's Up' on the big screen. Relax poolside or enjoy the movie while floating around in the lagoon pool.

Gates will open at 8 p.m. with the movie beginning at sunset. Concessions will be available for purchase (cash only) and fun give-a-ways will light-up the night (available while supplies last).

Tickets are still available, and may be purchased at the Frisco Athletic Center. A limited number of tickets are available. Admission is $7 per person, or purchase five or more tickets at one time for a discounted price of $6 each. Children younger than two are free, but must have a ticket to enter. Any remaining tickets may be purchased at FAC Customer Service the evening of the event.

DNT ramp to SRT to close tonight

As part of NTTA's interchange construction project, the southbound exit ramp from the Dallas North Tollway to SH 121 (Sam Rayburn Tollway) will be closed tonight and will be replaced by a new temporary exit ramp Thursday morning, June 24. 

The existing exit ramp will be closed tonight starting at 8:00 PM and will remain closed throughout the night.  During this closure, southbound motorists heading for SH 121 will need to exit the Tollway further north at the Warren Parkway exit and travel down the frontage road. 

A new temporary exit ramp to SH 121 will open at 5:00 AM Thursday morning in a slightly different location. Motorists are encouraged to use caution in the area as people become accustomed to the new ramp location.

Proclamation: Scleroderma Awareness Month

WHEREAS, Scleroderma is a chronic, disabling autoimmune disease in which the body’s soft tissues suffer from an overproduction of collagen affecting many parts of the body including skin, internal organs, and blood vessels; and

WHEREAS, Scleroderma sufferers often experience damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys, and the gastrointestinal system; and

WHEREAS, Many sufferers develop pulmonary hypertension resulting of constriction of blood vessels; and

WHEREAS, African Americans are more susceptible to systemic scleroderma; and

WHEREAS, Researchers have yet to identify the exact cause or causes of scleroderma but have found links between scleroderma and rheumatic disease; and

WHEREAS, An estimated 300,000 Americans suffer from scleroderma, 80 percent of those are women; and

WHEREAS, The estimated total economic impact of scleroderma treatment is estimated to be in excess of $1.5 billion annually; and

WHEREAS, The morbidity cost associated with scleroderma is an estimated $819,000,000 annually; and

WHEREAS, The direct cost of treatment for scleroderma is estimated to be $462,000,000 annually; and

WHEREAS, There is a significant need for further research focusing on the epidemiology of scleroderma to increase understanding of the causes of the disease and its treatment; and

WHEREAS, The United States Congress has recognized the need to raise awareness of the impact of scleroderma on public health and has designated a National Scleroderma Awareness Month; and

WHEREAS, The designation of such a month would recognize the efforts of health care providers, patients, and scleroderma advocacy organizations to increase awareness of scleroderma and of the need for increased research on scleroderma; and

WHEREAS, The National Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service, has honored the City of Frisco by naming our great city as a “2009 Tree City USA”. It is the seventh consecutive year that the City of Frisco has received such a prestigious honor; and

WHEREAS, The trees in Frisco help clean the air, conserve soil and water, and reduce heating and cooling costs by moderating temperatures. Tree City USA honors the countless men, women, and children in Frisco who are working hard to ensure a greener, healthier tomorrow for us all; and

WHEREAS, Our Urban Forestry Board and our Parks and Recreation Department have planted additional trees in our medians, parkways, park facilities and municipal facilities, and have presented numerous educational programs to FISD elementary school students; and

WHEREAS, This year’s record number of Tree City USA communities shows a growing level of dedication and care for our Urban Forests. In addition, it shows that the Citizens of Frisco value their trees for the beauty, grace, comfort, and practical blessings they bring.

Coit Road Closure Between Main and Eldorado - June 21 & 22

Coit Road will be closed between Main Street and Eldorado Parkway on Monday and Tuesday, June 21 and 22, in order for the road to be resurfaced. During the closure, residents who normally use Coit Road will need to detour to Independence Parkway in order to travel between Main Street and Eldorado Parkway.

Traffic Switch on Preston Road - June 19

As part of TxDOT’s widening project, traffic on Preston Road will be switched to the new pavement between Eldorado Parkway and US 380 on Saturday, June 19 (weather permitting). Two-way traffic will run together on the new east half of the road while TxDOT reconstructs the west half. Once the switch occurs, westbound traffic waiting to turn onto Preston Road will have to stop at a new location farther east than they have been used to. Westbound motorists should pay special attention to the new location of stop lines on all driveways and roadways in the construction zone, such as westbound Rock Hill Road, Panther Creek Parkway, and Mockingbird Lane.

Also, a new traffic signal on Preston Road at Panther Creek Parkway will become operational on Saturday. Motorists are urged to use caution at this intersection as people become accustomed to the new traffic control patterns.

Atmost Energy to "Flare" Natural Gas

Atmos Energy to Flare Natural Gas at Rockhill Road in Collin County

DALLAS (June 17, 2010) – Weather permitting, Atmos Energy crews and contractors will oversee a controlled gas flaring on Friday morning, June 18, at the corners of Rockhill Road and Coit Road. “Flares” or “flaring”
is a standard industry practice to safely burn natural gas that needs to be removed from a specific section of pipeline so that employees can work on the pipe. People in the area will notice a large flame visible from a distance and a continuous sound for up to two hours.

Memorial Day Service

MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY TO BE HELD AT FRISCO COMMONS PARK, MAY 31

(May 28, 2010) A wreath presentation, flag ceremony and patriotic music are planned for the Memorial Day observance to be held on Monday, May 31 at 9 a.m. at the city’s Veteran’s Memorial at Frisco Commons Park, 8000 McKinney Road.

This year’s guest speak is retired Air Force Colonel Richard Graham. Boy Scout Troop 298 will present the colors. Observers will also enjoy patriotic performances by the Frisco Chorale and the Frisco Community Band, which will also hold a concert in the large pavilion following the
ceremony. Organizers are encouraging observers to bring their lawn
chairs and blankets.

Additional parking is available at the intersection of McKinney and Sunset, in front of the Boys and Girls Club. Parking is also available at the Youth Center Park, 7775 Camellia, and Staley Middle School, 6927 Stadium Lane; however, no shuttle service will be provided.
The event is sponsored by the Frisco Garden Club, the Frisco VFW Post 8273 and the City of Frisco. Other event participants include Civil Air Patrol Cadets, the Frisco Noon Rotary Club and Frisco ISD.

NTTA closure for interchange construction

As part of NTTA’s interchange construction project, NTTA will close two southbound lanes of the Dallas North Tollway and a southbound exit ramp in Frisco over the weekend starting Saturday morning, May 22 at 7:00 AM. These lanes will be temporarily reopened Saturday night between 10:00 PM and 11:30 PM to accommodate traffic leaving the Jimmy Buffett concert, and then will be closed again for the duration of Sunday, May 23. Most of the lanes will reopen by 5:00 AM on Monday May 24. The specific road closures are summarized below:

Two southbound lanes of the Dallas North Tollway will be closed over the weekend on the bridge that crosses over Gaylord Parkway. This will reduce the Tollway to one southbound lane and motorists should expect delays most of Saturday and Sunday.

The southbound exit ramp from the Dallas North Tollway to SH 121 will also be closed over the weekend. Southbound motorists heading for SH 121 will need to exit the Tollway further north at the Warren Parkway exit and travel down the frontage road.

At 5:00 AM on Monday, May 24, NTTA will reopen the exit ramp and one of the lanes on the southbound Dallas North Tollway, but one of the lanes will remain closed. (The Tollway remains limited to two southbound lanes between Gaylord Parkway and Legacy Drive for approximately one year.)

Motorists are urged to use caution in the construction zone.

(May 19, 2010) Join the City of Frisco congratulate the Wakeland High School Varsity Boys Soccer Team as the new 4A State Champions tomorrow, May 20, starting at 6 p.m. Head to Simpson Plaza in front of City Hall,
located in the heart of Frisco Square, 6101 Frisco Square Blvd., and 'cheer for the team' as the players make their way around the plaza in a fire engine.

"We're so proud of the team," said Mayor Maher Maso. "We wanted to honor our latest state champions with a pep rally in the plaza. We encourage the
entire community to join us, whether you're a Wolverine or not, and applaud these young men, as well as their coaches and trainers, on their incredible achievement."

Following the Wakeland High pep rally, all of Frisco is invited to walk
across the street to Pizza Hut Park for Frisco Community Night, where FC Dallas will play against the L.A. Galaxy. Pre-game festivities begin at 6 p.m. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

All FISD students get in free. Adults and non-FISD students can purchase discounted seats for $15 each. Two dollars from each ticket purchased will benefit the Frisco Education Foundation. One dollar from each ticket purchased will benefit FISD schools.

Donald Sweigart Kern Eagle Scout Proclamation

WHEREAS, Donald Sweigart Kern, son of Donald and Angela Kern and brother of Andrew has been a resident of Frisco, Texas, since 2000; and

WHEREAS, Donald Sweigart Kern plans to pursue a career as a Veterinarian and he also enjoys working with special needs children at the Special Olympics, sailboat racing on Lake Ray Hubbard, rollerblading, indoor rock climbing and golfing.

WHEREAS, Donald Sweigart Kern has been a member of the Boy Scouts of America since ¬¬¬2001 and is currently a member of Troop 216 which meets at Grace Avenue United Methodist Church. He has served as Senior Patrol Leader for Troop 216, Patrol Leader within the Troop, Troop Guide and Troop Quartermaster; and

WHEREAS, At a Court of Honor held on February 22, 2010, Donald Sweigart Kern was presented with the rank of Eagle Scout, a rank obtained by only four percent of all U.S. Scouts, having successfully completed 32 merit badges and continues to work on new ones. His Eagle service project was to build and erect 2 Purple Martin birdhouses and 2 Bat boxes in the Plantation Spring HOA Park. His team of volunteers also removed more than (3) 24’-trailer loads of debris from the park area, which included fallen trees, their branches and trash.

Traffic will transition back to the existing pavement just west of Preston Road.
Motorists should pay special attention to the new temporary turning lanes that will be available on Eldorado Parkway and the new location of stop lines on northbound Frisco Street and North County Road. Motorists are urged to use caution in the area as people become accustomed to the new traffic patterns.
