Frisco Initiates Online Ticket Pledge Drive
for NCAA Football Title Games
City trying to attract the NCAA Division I Championship games following the 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons
FRISCO, Texas – Officials in Frisco have announced an online ticket pledge initiative for the city’s efforts to attract the NCAA Division I Football Championship games following the 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons. In November, Frisco was chosen by the NCAA as one of two finalist cities for the upcoming national championship contests, and after final presentations on Feb. 25, a decision on the game’s destination should occur in early March.
Linking to the website www.collegefootballfrisco.com will give online visitors the opportunity to learn more about Frisco’s effort to serve as host, and also allow them to pledge their ticket interest should the event be played at the 23,000-seat multi-purpose Pizza Hut Park.
“We’re calling on our residents, businesses, and visitors, alike, to rally and pledge their support to bring NCAA Division I football to Frisco,” Mayor Maher Maso said. “We know folks in North Texas love sports! Our goal is to show the NCAA committee that we can help them grow their event, which is a win for the NCAA, for Frisco and the entire region.”
Frisco’s local organizing committee, also known as “Team Frisco,” consists of the City of Frisco, its Economic Development Corporation and Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Frisco Chamber of Commerce, Hunt Sports Group, LLC/Pizza Hut Park, and Southland Conference.
“We believe a ticket pledge initiative is an important piece of our larger strategic plan to show the NCAA the collective benefits of bringing the title game to Frisco,” Tom Burnett, commissioner of the Frisco-based Southland Conference, said. “With approximately five weeks left before the final presentation, it’s a creative opportunity to show this area’s interest in supporting the national championship.”

Frisco Library - Martin Luther King, Jr. Exhibit
The Frisco Public Library will present an interactive exhibit honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement , Monday, January 18th. The event will take place in the library, in the Program Room on the second floor, from Noon to 9:00 PM. Elementary school children and their families are encouraged to take part in a number of multimedia education stations, browse through books displays and other materials highlighting the life of Dr. King, the civil rights struggle, and activists who fought to make their voices heard. The Frisco Public Library is located at 6101 Frisco Square Blvd inside the George A. Purefoy Municipal Center.

Haiti Update from Administration

We are all devastated this morning by the images of death and destruction coming from Haiti in the wake of yesterday’s massive earthquake. The U.S. Conference of Mayors has a long history of support for Haiti and its people.
Without fail, when disasters like this occur, mayors call to ask how they and their cities can help. Here is what we know so far:
President Obama has designated USAID as the lead agency for our government-wide response. USAID is dispatching a Disaster Assistance Response Team and has activated its partners, the Fairfax County (VA) Urban Search and Rescue Team and the Los Angeles County Search and Rescue Team. These teams will be composed of up to 72 personnel, six search and rescue canines and up to 48 tons of rescue equipment. They will be accompanied by USAID disaster experts who will assist with assessments of the situation.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has announced that the Coast Guard Cutter Forward arrived off Port Au Prince this morning and was the first U.S. asset on the scene.
The President’s statement on the situation in Haiti and the nation’s response to it is at http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2010/01/13/help-haiti.

Preston Road Lane Shifts
As part of TxDOT’s widening project, traffic will be shifted into different lanes along Preston Road and on some side streets on Tuesday, January 12. Specifically, TxDOT has constructed some temporary lanes along the roadways and will shift traffic over so that existing pavement can be removed and construction can begin on the other side of the roadway. Traffic will remain in this configuration for several months.
• Traffic will be shifted to the east on Preston Road between Fisher Road and Eldorado Parkway;
• Traffic will be shifted to the north on Panther Creek Parkway for one block east of Preston Road;
• Traffic will be shifted to the south on Rockhill Road for one block east of Preston Road; and
• Traffic will be shifted to the east on the northbound exit ramp from Preston Road to US 380.
Motorists are urged to use caution in the area as people become accustomed to the new traffic pattern.

Custer Road Closure
As part of TxDOT’s widening project, Custer Road will be closed intermittently during the day between Eldorado Parkway and Fountainview Drive on Thursday, January 14, between 9 AM and 4 PM. It is expected that this section of roadway will be repeatedly closed for about 15 minutes at a time and then reopened for about 20 minutes at a time.
Motorists should expect long delays at this location on Custer Road during this midday closure and through traffic should seek an alternate route. Regional traffic can use Preston Road to the west or Stonebridge Drive to the east an alternatives. Local area traffic should use Westridge Boulevard, Independence Parkway, and Eldorado Parkway to go around the intermittent closure. Neighborhood traffic headed for Frisco Heights or Winding Creek Estates should use Eldorado Parkway to access the neighborhoods from the south or use Winding Creek Drive to access them from the north. The new Custer Star shopping center at the corner of Custer Road and Eldorado Parkway will remain accessible by using Eldorado Parkway to access it from the south or by using its northern driveway which will remain accessible from the north.

PHONE SERVICE DISRUPTED IN NEIGHBORHOOD FOLLOWING OVERNIGHT FIRE; POLICE STEP UP PATROLS FOR EMERGENCIES
(January 8, 2010) Some Frisco residents are without phone service after a large telephone 'box' was damaged by fire overnight. As a result, police
are stepping up patrols in the Panther Creek Estates neighborhood to respond to emergencies for those without cell phones.
Firefighters received the call at approximately 2 a.m. regarding a fire at the telephone box located near the intersection of Rosebud Lane and LaGrange. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
At this time, the number of homes without phone service is unknown.
Panther Creek Estates spans Eldorado north to Panther Creek and from Hillcrest east to Coit Rd.
AT & T repair crews have been contacted. At this time, it is not known how long it will take to restore service.

Getting ready for the weather
By now, you have heard the news reports about the cold weather coming and what you should be doing. I thought I would list some of the things that the City prepares for:
1) We contact critical health care facilities and review items such as emergency generators (making sure they are started to ensure reliability and that service is up-to-date). 11 such facilities were contacted/reviewed in Frisco.
2) We inspect our own facilities, especially critical ones to make sure maintenance has been carried out. Our Fire Department contacts local companies to check on sprinkler systems and the heating portions are in operation.
3. Staff has also collected information from the various utilities today regarding contact information if a resident is without services during the upcoming cold weather. Below are the contact phone numbers for the various energy utilities in Frisco. Below are the numbers for those utilities in case you have any issue:
a. CoServ Electric and Gas – 940-321-7800 or 800-274-4014 (follow the prompts for assistance) Coserv advised that starting today through the weekend they will not be completing any cutoffs for non-payment of any services unless it is for a safety issues.
b. Atmos Gas – 888-286-6700
c. TXU Energy – 972-791-2888 or 800-818-6132
d. Oncor – 888-313-6862
We also obtained contact information for the Energy Assistance Agency – Community Services, Inc. (Denton and Collin Counties) 903-872-2401.
These agencies assists individuals with obtaining service when they are indigent or in need of financial assistance with energy cost.
4. Public Works had crews inspecting streets and available to sand since midnight last night.

DALLAS (Jan.5, 2010) — With record-setting low temperatures expected this week, furnaces and space heaters will be running full blast across Texas. Before turning up a thermostat or plugging in a space heater, remember to think twice about both safety and energy efficiency.
The National Fire Protection Association states that heating equipment, like space heaters, are the No. 1 cause of home fires during December, January and February and the second-leading cause of home fires year-round. Most accidents involving space heaters are the result of human error – heaters are placed too close to combustible material like drapes and furniture, or they have not been properly maintained.
Don’t end up a statistic. Follow these tips and share them with your friends and family:
• Give space heaters their space. Space heaters pose a higher risk of fire and death than central heating systems. Keep the space heater at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including walls.
• Unplug the heater every time you leave the room and when you go to bed.
• Plug electric-powered space heaters into an outlet with sufficient capacity and never into an extension cord.
• Make sure the plug fits snugly in the outlet, since a loose plug can overheat. If you’re using the space heater in the bathroom, be sure to use a ground-fault circuit interrupter. Remember, electricity and water do not mix.
• Don’t hide the cord under a rug or carpet. This can cause the cord to overheat and start a fire.
• Keep it stable. Don’t put your space heater on plush carpet or other surfaces where the space heater may tip over easily.
• Check the tag. Make sure an independent testing laboratory (Underwriters Laboratories) has approved your new space heater.
To conserve energy, try to keep your thermostat at 68 degrees or lower. Space heaters should be on timers when you’re at home. Use programmable thermostats to lower temperatures automatically when you’re not at home, leave drapes or curtains open to take advantage of solar heat, and throw an extra blanket on the bed rather than turn up the heat. As a rule of thumb, heating and cooling are responsible for 40 percent of energy use in the home. Stay safe and warm, but conserve where you can.

Oncor operates the largest distribution and transmission system in Texas, delivering power to more than 3 million homes and businesses and operating approximately 117,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines in Texas. While Oncor is owned by a limited number of investors (including majority owner, Energy Future Holdings Corp.), Oncor is managed by its Board of Directors, which is comprised of a majority of independent directors.
